His research focuses on how hearing impacts social judgments we make of others (e.g., assessing someone’s emotional state, confidence, gender, etc. based on what we hear). Additionally, he is interested in clinical audiology innovation (clinical audiology simulation, automated audiometry, new treatments for otitis media, etc.). His clinical interests include vestibular testing, intraoperative nerve monitoring, and cochlear implantation.
Importantly, he loves to play ping-pong, read books, listen to old jazz music, and spend time exploring Kentucky's many outdoor spaces.
Hammam AlMakadma, Ph.D., Au.D.
Email: ha.almakadma@louisville.edu
Assistant Professor, Director Newborn Hearing Screening
Dr. AlMakadma joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders in 2017. He graduated from Syracuse University where he earned both his Ph.D. in Audiology, and his Au.D. degrees. Dr. AlMakadma assumes teaching responsibilities in the areas of: Anatomy and Physiology, Electrophysiologic Techniques in Audiology, and Amplification Fitting and Selection. In addition to teaching, Dr. AlMakadma’s research activities include clinical and translational projects. The overarching goal of his research is to investigate new and improved audiological tests for clinical use. He is currently interested in studying ways to refine wideband acoustic immittance measurements for improved diagnostic applications in adult otological cases and in pediatric practice.
Laura Nesbitt Galloway, Au.D.
Email: lrnesb01@louisville.edu
Assistant Professor, Director of Clinical Education
Dr. Galloway joined the faculty in August 2016 and received her Doctor of Audiology degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2014. Dr. Galloway is the Academic Curriculum Coordinator and is very active in student research mentorship in the areas of audiology rehabilitation and hearing loss prevention. She teaches the following courses: Clinical Techniques, Amplification Technology, Audiologic Rehabilitation, and Prevention of Hearing Loss. Dr. Galloway is a certified Course Director (CD) with the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC). Students have the opportunity to sit for the Occupational Hearing Conservationist (OHC) certificate exam as part of her hearing conservation course. Dr. Galloway has her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) through the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Yonghee Oh, Ph.D.
Email: yonghee.oh@louisville.edu
Assistant Professor, Director of Student Research
Dr. Oh joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders in 2022. He graduated from Ohio State University where he earned both his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and his Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences. He also completed his postdoctoral training at the Oregon Hearing Research Center (OHRC), Oregon Health & Science University and at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR), Portland VA Medical Center (under Dr. Lina Reiss and Dr. Frederick Gallun). Dr. Oh teaches coursework in Cochlear Implants, Research Methods, Medical Audiology, and Investigation in Audiology. Dr. Oh’s research is focused on asking how hearing loss affects auditory function and speech processing. He is searching how other sensory information interacts during speech perception processing and developing a computational model with diverse theories in the areas of psychophysics, digital signal processing, and neural networks to answer those questions. His current studies are conducted using human subjects (healthy, normal-hearing participants and patients with hearing impairment and/or other sensory deficits) and computational model-based approaches using artificial intelligence techniques such as blind source segregation.
